Shelter for Concentration Camp Gate

Ebensee 2025

The building is located opposite a service center that was built in 2024. The two buildings mark the entrance to the concentration camp cemetery. Together with the cemetery’s historic memorial tower they form an ensemble.

The five-meter-high structure was placed between trees. A constriction divides it into two smaller tower-like units. The upper parts of the walls are provided with relief-like structures. This makes the building appear less tall than it actually is.

The narrow, elongated building tapers towards the ends. Seen from the side, it appears narrower than it is.

Two floor-to-ceiling glazed windows face north and east. The roof projects out here and covers a 70 cm wide outdoor area. The south and west facades are closed. Inside, the area under the ceiling is brightened up by a skylight. The roof (a watertight tub made of stainless steel) was completely prefabricated in the workshop.

The walls of the building are made of brick, the upper ring beam of exposed concrete. Within the plastered wall surfaces are areas of exposed concrete. The concrete floor slabs were ground to create a terrazzo-like appearance. The metal supporting structure consists of hot-dip galvanized steel, the roof parapet is made of powder-coated aluminum.

The newly renovated concentration camp gate was positioned at an angle, as seen in the floor plan. It was intended to have no geometric reference to the building’s walls and be clearly perceived as a freestanding object. The building’s shell was intended to provide protection against weather and insect infestation. A constant exchange of air takes place through slits fitted with insect screens.
